Data Visualization with Other Tools
Workshop 31 - Winter Semester 2026-27
Overview
Introduction to alternative data visualization tools and their applications in research.
While ggplot2 is standard for R users, many other powerful visualization tools exist across Python, the web, and standalone applications. This workshop surveys complementary visualization frameworks, highlighting when and why you might choose them for specific types of data, interactive exploration, or collaborative sharing.
Topics Covered
- Python Data Visualization: Overview of
matplotlib, seaborn, andplotnine(the grammar of graphics in Python) - Interactive Visualizations: Building dynamic charts with
plotlyin R and Python - Web-Based & GUI Tools: No-code and low-code visualization platforms (RAWGraphs, Datawrapper, Flourish)
- Network & Relational Data: Visualizing networks, trees, and hierarchical relationships (Gephi,
igraph, ggraph) - Spatial & Geographic Data: Maps and geospatial visualizations for linguistic and survey data
- Choosing the Right Tool: Trade-offs between reproducibility, interactivity, speed, and presentation polish
